Three road stretches in Shamator district have been affected by landslides following heavy rainfall, disrupting connectivity and leaving travellers stranded.
Speaking to The Morung Express, Richard Thong, District Project Assistant (DPA), DDMA Shamator, said the exact villages affected could not be confirmed at present. However, he said three road sections have been impacted: the road connecting Shamator to Tuensang (NH), Shamator NAP Ward–Kiphire National Highway, and PMGSY road connecting Shamator to Chessore subdivision, which further links to Aghunato in Zunheboto district.
Richard said the roads were likely affected during the night due to continuous rainfall, although the reports reached the district authorities only on Sunday.
He informed that road clearance operations have been initiated in collaboration with the National Highways wing of the Public Works Department (PWD). However, the Shamator NAP Ward–Kiphire road cannot be restored at present as the road has been completely cut off.
“The concerned authority had repaired the road last year also, but again it’s gone. The road is completely cut off,” he said.
Richard said no fatalities or injuries have been reported so far. He added that the main impact has been on commuters, with travellers stranded due to the disruption in road connectivity.
On reports of damage to houses or other structures, he said the DDMA has not received any information so far. However, he noted that such reports are sometimes received after a delay from remote areas.
The DDMA and the PWD National Highways authorities are monitoring the situation, while road clearance efforts continue on the affected stretches.
