Dimapur, June 12 (MExN): With no clear divide between pre-Monsoon and Monsoon rains, the North East has been receiving good rainfall for the last many days and is set to see the entry of the Southwest Monsoon in the next 24 to 48 hours, according to Skymet Weather Services.
At present, multiple weather systems are affecting weather in the region. “An upper air cyclonic circulation can be seen over Assam, Meghalaya and neighboring areas. Another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northern parts of Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim,” Skymet’s weather update on Sunday stated. Moderate southerly/ southwesterly winds are reaching up to the North East, it added.
Though good rainfall is already going on over several states of Northeast, rain intensity is likely to pick up pace and during the next 24 hours with heavy to very heavy showers expected over Tripura and Mizoram area. Thereafter, Nagaland, Meghalaya and Assam will also start receiving moderate to heavy rainfall. By morning hours of June 14, extremely heavy rain is expected over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
“The low-lying areas of Assam may be inundated as these heavy rains are expected to continue for next few days,” Skymet stated warning that “Flood-like situation cannot be ruled out.”
The intensity of rain will reduce by June 16 or 17 over Northeast India but the rain belt will extend up to Bihar, West Bengal and foothills of East Uttar Pradesh.
