In a significant development that is expected to boost the village’s solid waste management system, Mopungchuket village under Mokokchung district was provided with a pick-up truck by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) under Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) which was formally handed over to the village today by the Executive Engineer, PHED Mokokchung, Yanger Pongen.
While handing over the vehicle to the village council of Mopungchuket, the Executive Engineer said that Mopungchuket was comparatively ahead of most villages in Nagaland in many aspects including waste management and encouraged the villagers to scale it further up. While appreciating the village for successfully tackling the issue of solid waste management, he also urged the villagers to devise an approach towards addressing the question of liquid waste management. While appreciating the Youth Department of Mopungchuket Baptist Church for their waste management initiative in the village, he also encouraged the villagers to take “cleanliness to the next level” adding that it was not a matter of pride but a challenge for the village as others were looking up to Mopungchuket.
The Executive Engineer also mentioned that there were two main goals under Swachh Bharat Mission which included making India open defecation free by October, 2019 and to achieve Clean India by 2022. Further, he added that the two goals were primarily set for influencing behavioral change among the citizens of the country and urged the villagers of Mopungchuket to make cleanliness their lifestyle.
Council chairman of Mopungchuket, Aosadang while speaking at the function thanked the PHED for the pick-up truck and also for the department’s focus on the village in implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission. Youth Director of Mopungchuket Baptist Church, L.Yanger Pongen also thanked the PHED and also highlighted the cleanliness initiatives undertaken by the church in the village. Pastor of Mopungchuket Baptist Church, Rev. Jongpong Jamir pronounced the dedicatory prayer for the vehicle.
