Dimapur, June 14 (MExN): A daughter-mother duo walked away with top prizes at the first-ever Nagaland Women Online Open Chess Tournament held on June 13.
Shabnam Singh took the first position while her mother Anju Singh was ranked second on the top-5 players’ list.
The third position was taken by Shenikali Hesso, while Muzivolu Veswu, and T Visela Sangtam took the 4th and 5th position respectively.
According to a press release from Nagaland Chess Association (NCA), while 31 players registered for the event, 26 competed in the championship.
As a mark of encouragement, all the players were awarded special prizes according to their rankings, it said.
The Nagaland Chess Enthusiasts under the aegis of NCA and in partnership with like-minded friends and well-wishers organised the tournament.
Amidst global uncertainties of COVID-19 Pandemic, it was organised to encourage players to spend more hours at home during the lockdown period, the NCA release said.
The games were played on Chess Arena by using the Lichess App, an open-source Internet Chess Server, with 5+0s (Blitz), and overall duration of 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, the NCA expressed its gratitude to the organizers, sponsors, donors, and the players for the success of the tournament.
It further informed all the chess enthusiasts that many more online tournaments will be organized during the weekends both by individuals and groups, under its chief patronage.
