Mokokchung, February 21 (MExN): Fazl Ali College’s Department of Ao commemorated the 25th International Mother Language Day under the theme ‘Where words meet culture’ at the college auditorium on February 21.

I TemjenTzudir, Publication Head of Ao Riju (Ao Academy), spoke on the significance of the day. Tzudir emphasised that a mother tongue serves as an individual's fundamental identity, a cornerstone of their cultural existence. He warned against the impression of linguistic mastery in other languages while neglecting one's own, stating, "Even if you know a lot of other languages, if you are unable to speak one’s own mother tongue, then one will be fooling oneself."

Tzudir further delved into the distinctions of specific Ao words and their contextual usages, highlighting the intricate relationship between language and culture.

LS Vinod Kumar, Vice Principal of Fazl Ali College also spoke on ‘Beauty in Diversity,’ highlighting the importance of linguistic and cultural pluralism.

The celebration also witnessed cultural performances. Sixth-semester girl students presented a traditional rice pounding song, while their male counterparts presented a rendition of the folk song ‘Yimlusur Ken’ and the fourth-semester students performed a folk fusion song.

A highlight of the event was the Ao folk story narration competition, exclusively for Ao Honours students for all semesters. Imsuyangla (6th semester) bagged the first prize, followed by Repaienla (4th semester) in second place, and Kikagangla (2nd semester) in third.
