Kohima, March 24 (MExN): Hundreds gathered to pay their last respect to Mother Zaputuoü Angami who passed away aged 89 years, in the early hours of the morning today after a prolonged illness. A small funeral service was held at the Kohima Orphanage where people from all walks of life turned up to pay tributes to the woman who changed the lives of many a destitute.
In her speech Pastor of Kohima Christian Revival Mission Church Basangu-u Yashu said Mrs. Zaputuoü was a woman of prayer and very involved in the church right from her younger years. ‘We have to continue the good work she has done,’ she said.
Shurheizolie Theunuo spoke on behalf of the family and thanked all present for attending the funeral service. Stating that the orphanage would now fall on the shoulders of Ms. Neibanuo, he requested everyone to keep her in their prayers because this would be a huge responsibility.
Among others Theunuo thanked Lhouvie Belho and family who had donated the site for the present orphanage and also the site for the burial for the mother.
Mother Zaputuoü’s last wish had been that April 16 should be observed as ‘Orphanage Day’. Theunuo appealed to all government agencies and public leaders to make her wish come true.
Also, Rotarian Rosemary Dzuvichu said that the Rotary Club (with support from 2 American clubs) has been sponsoring the diet of the orphanage for about 4 years now. Expressing great sorrow at the demise, Dzuvichu said Mrs. Zaputuoü had always wanted to build a home for her many children. She appealed to everyone present to collaborate with the club in procuring a proper land for the orphanage.
Naga Mothers’ Association president Abieü Meru in a short speech called Mrs. Zaputuoü ‘an honorable woman’ and a shining example for mothers everywhere. Special songs were sung by CYE, CRMC Kohima and the children of Kohima Orphanage. The final funeral rites were given by Rev. Dr. DL Sanchu, Executive Secretary, ARCC.
Condolence messages were received from the Governor of Nagaland, Chief Minister, Nagaland Women Commission, Indian Red Cross Society, SP office, KMC, APO, Lions Club, Angami Students Union, Social Welfare, Angami Women Organization, Dihoma Women Society and a host of other organizations.
Mother Zaputuoü was born in Dihoma village on September 27, 1922. Having committed her life to social service, the ‘mother’ came to a realization that her calling was to take care of orphans and destitute children. With this commitment, she set up the Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home in the year 1973, with one child.
In the 38 years of running this home, she has been instrumental in giving a new lease of life, a home, education, new hope and visions to many abandoned, poor and destitute children. Presently, there are 77 children in the home. She has received numerous awards for her outstanding services to humanity from various governments and social agencies.

Governor, NSF pay homage to the Mother
DIMAPUR, MARCH 24 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland Nikhil Kumar expressed grief on learning about the demise of Mother Zaputou Angami, the founder of Kohima Orphanage. In a condolence message the Governor observed that the Kohima Orphanage founded by Mother Zaputou stood as a symbol of love and strength for children without parents and her service to them for the last 38 years will be ever remembered. The Governor conveyed his heartfelt condolences to all in Orphanage and prayed to God Almighty to give them strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
The Naga Students’ Federation has also expressed sadness over the demise of Mother Zaputuo Angami at Kohima last night. “In her demise we have lost a great mother, who had sacrificed her entire life in the service and care of the downtrodden. She was a mother always concerned about the welfare of the younger generation moulding them towards the nation building. Her demise is a grave lost not only to the children in the orphanage but also to the younger generation of the Naga society”, stated a condolence message from NSF President Mutsikhoyo Yhobu. The NSF pointed out that the vacuum created by her demise can never be filled up but the invaluable services rendered to the Naga society will always be cherished. “We pray that the Almighty God grants strength to the younger generation and also grant everlasting peace and eternal rest to the Great Mother”, stated the condolence.
