Mt. Saramati: The pride of Nagas located in the land of Yimchungrü Naga

Mt. Saramati, an ultra-prominent peak of South East Asia also the highest peak in Nagaland is located in Pungro Sub-Division of Kiphire District.


Straddled at the International border of India and Myanmar (Burma) it has height of 3,840 m (12,552 ft) and a prominence coverage of 2,885 m (9,465 ft) covered by virgin forest. It is endowed with beautiful landscapes and rich biodiversity. It is best spot for mountaineering for trekking lovers. Besides Nagaland, the views in Myanmar towns and Chindwin River and various bewitching sceneries from the peak is breathtaking.


The most desirable season to visit the mountain is April, May, October and November. Snowfall at Mt. Saramati begins at the onset of spring season, while this time one would be fascinating to see the whole track covered with the blooming of Rhododendron (Nagaland State flower). As the winter sets, it covered with snowfall and it is best time for sightseeing as the sky is clear as crystal. Rich and Diverse species of birds, plants and animals are found in the locality. At the base of Mt. Saramati the Fakim wildlife sanctuary is nestled. Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary was named after Fakim village.


One will take 12 hours on road to reach Pungro town from the Kohima and another 2 hours from Pungro to Thanamir village, which is gate way to destination also provided with affordable guest house with loyal and loving people.


One can also visit many other tourist attraction spots, which can be visited with the rest while trekking Mt. Saramati. Fakim Wildlife sanctuary, stone cave at Mimi and Salomi village, angling at Tizu River and limestone deposit and Mimi are few destinations in Nagaland. One may also lucky to witnessed primitive method of wild honey (rocky bee) harvesting which is nested at the very step cliff at Mimi village and few surrounding villages.


If the state/central government invest more on improvement of infrastructure like road conditions, these spots will be the best destinations for many tourist.
