Winners of 12th Sumi Chess Championship 2025.
DIMAPUR, AUGUST 23 (MExN): Mughaho Awomi emerged champion of the 12th Sumi Chess Championship 2025 which concluded on Friday at Hotel Acacia, Dimapur.
On the third day, the competition witnessed a close contest across all categories. In the open category, Mughaho, Kunvuto, Kughaho Kiho, Toivi and Thophimi were in strong contention for the trophy. A draw between Mughaho and Kunvuto eventually gave the former a slim lead, finishing with 6.5 points. Toivi Yeptho secured the first runner-up position, while Kunvuto bagged second place.
The most notable performance came from Thophimi, who played as an under-18 participant but surprised his opponents by competing against strong contenders in the open category. He claimed the fourth position, ahead of several seasoned players.
In the under-18 category, Pulonito Hesso, a student of NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, topped the table and was crowned champion. The Chishi brothers, Gihuca and Jesse, finished as first and second runners-up respectively.
The under-14 category saw encouraging participation from women players, though male participants dominated the board. Tunato Awomi clinched the championship title, while Pinuka J Zhimo and Kuxupu G Achumi secured the first and second runners-up spots. In the same category, Apishe Kiba Satami of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, was declared champion among women participants, with Jeremy Nitova Zhimomi of NN Nagi School and Ahivi G Achumi finishing as first and second runners-up.
A total of 15 girls competed in the championship. Among them, Shenikali Hesso, Alibo Mugha Kiba and Adele Jakhalu emerged as champion, first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. Edlina Nini Kiba Satami of Bloom Academy, Ekranipathar, and Kimeto Awomi of DMI St Joseph School received special awards as the youngest female and male participants.
Altogether, cash awards amounting to Rs 2.8 lakh were sponsored for the winners.
