Putting speculation to rest, Leader of the Meghalaya Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday confirmed that he is not contesting the 2019 Parliamentary elections.
“I am not contesting the MP elections as I am happy to do what I am doing,” Dr Sangma said.
It may be mentioned that as far as the Tura seat is concerned, Dr Sangma’s brother, Zenith Sangma along with former Cabinet Minister, Deborah Marak have also applied for the party ticket.
In addition, the Chief of Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, Richard Mrong Marak too, has applied for the ticket to contest the election from Tura seat.
Amid all this, Senior Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh had batted for Dr Sangma as the best candidate from the Congress for the Tura seat.
Reacting to this, Dr Sangma said, “It is a good sign that several leaders of the party have expressed their interest to the contest the Lok Sabha elections from Shillong and Tura seat.”
He also said that as far as the Tura seat is concerned, they have to wait and see the outcome of the mandate of the people and they have confidence that the people know by now.
