Disrupts Wokha–Merapani road connectivity

Continuous rainfall triggered multiple mudslides and infrastructure damage in Wokha district on Thursday, disrupting road connectivity and raising fresh concerns over the vulnerability of the Wokha–Merapani road.
A mudslide was reported between Chüdi and Longtsüng villages under Sanis Subdivision, blocking the road and hampering the movement of vehicles. Two electric poles also collapsed in the affected area due to continuous rainfall.
According to reports from the LMRPO, restoration works are currently underway under the supervision of the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sanis, to restore normal connectivity at the earliest.
In another incident, a landslide occurred at Sanis ‘0’ Point in the early hours of July 30. Large stone boulders and debris covered the road, leaving several vehicles stranded. Commuters were seen manually clearing rocks to create a narrow passage, allowing two-wheelers to cross while larger vehicles remained unable to proceed.
The Wokha–Merapani road, one of the district’s key lifeline routes, continues to face recurring damage during the monsoon due to soil erosion beneath the road and frequent mudslides from the adjoining hill slopes. Authorities have repeatedly cautioned commuters to remain vigilant while travelling along the stretch, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
The road serves as a crucial link between Wokha district headquarters and the Sanis and Bhandari subdivisions. Any prolonged disruption caused by landslides or other natural calamities could isolate several villages from the district headquarters, affecting the movement of people, essential supplies and emergency services.
Restoration efforts are ongoing, and commuters have been advised to exercise caution while travelling through the affected areas until road clearance operations are completed.
