Music carnival in Nagaland

For the first time in Dimapur, a music carnival with a difference is scheduled to be held at Life Spring Corner on July 23 under the theme “Treffen der Freigiester” which translates to “Meeting of the free thinkers”.   The resource persons are Louise Shishak, faculty of Music Education and Violin at the Margaret Shishak School of Muisc (Patkai Christian College), Avoni Odyuo, Music Director, Golden Theological College, Zareni Yanthan, Music Director, Kohima Lotha Baptist Church, Mhathung Odyuo, faculty, MSSM (Patkai) and Norman Villas Jr., faculty, Nagaland Conservatory of Music.   The day long music carnival includes music workshops on Piano, Choral Music, Violin guitar, Voice. The concept of the festival is to bring music students from across the city and to disseminate music learning skills amongst the students, and also to extend an opportunity to those who do not have formal access to music education. The carnival also aims to bring young and old alike through the discourse of music. The brainchild behind the music carnival is Abigail Odyuo, a student of Masters in Music Industries, Birmingham City University, UK.   Some of the activities inculcated in the Carnival is surely a treat to young music students as it involves playful learning activities like Rhythm Games, Mobile Music Games, Paint What You Hear, Music storytelling, Musical Movies, Karaoke, Identifying Sounds etc.   Those interested to attend the music carnival can contact +91- 9949688542 / +91-9436261060 for registration.

Profile of the resource persons

  Louise (Violin): Louise Shishak, faculty at Patkai Christian College, teaches education and violin at the Margaret Shishak School of Music. She completed her Bachelor of Music from Sheffield University, UK and Postgraduate Certificate of Education from Leeds University, UK. In 2000, having taught in primary schools in England for 4 years, she came to work in India at Woodstock school, Uttarakhand. She was an elementary teacher, but also led the beginner strings orchestra, played violin and viola in several ensembles, and enjoyed creating music with students and colleagues.     Avoni (Piano): Avoni Odyuo is currently the Music Director, Golden Crown Theological College and conductor and choir master for Golden Crown College Choir, Coronation choir, and GCTC alumni choir. She played the Piano since age 6 and passed Grade 8 in Piano and Theory from Associated board of Royal School of Music, London. She has sung as first soprano for Singapore Symphony Chorus (SSC) and performed Brahms requiem along with Singapore Symphony Chorus. She has done her Certificate in Higher Education in Creative Arts from University of Wales, and Masters of Divinity from TCA college, Singapore.     Zare (Choral Music): Zareni L. Yanthan finished her Masters in Church Music-Ministry Leadership from Singapore Bible College. She started her formal musical journey from School of Music, Kohima; later studied piano under Zingrin A. Shishak and Margaret A. Shishak at Patkai Christian College. She completed her Bachelor in Church Music (Piano Major) from Singapore Bible College under the guidance of Lanny Yap and Ng Teo Suey Sung. She now will be working full time as the Music Director at Kohima Lotha Baptist Church.     Mhathung (Voice): Mhathung Odyuo, a versatile musician is currently teaching voice to the batchelor of church music students in Margaret Shishak School of Music, Dimapur. A B.Com graduate, holding ATCL Diploma in western vocals, grade VIII and Grade VI in Flute, Cello, Recorder, Saxophone and Clarinet, he went to Chennai after graduation to learn music and thereafter, taught music. In Chennai, he conducted two church choirs in Perambur and Kolathur, and three ensembles. He's the founder-conductor of the other two - The Octave Singers, a male-voice group, and Serenades Breve, an eight-member ensemble.     Norman (Guitar): Normando Villas Jr., a pioneering faculty member of the premier music school in Nagaland, the Nagaland Conservatory of Music inaugurated in 2012, graduated from the university of Santo Tomas Conservatory Music, Philippines. Major in Guitar Performance under the tutelage of Professor Ruben F. Reyes, Normando Villas Jr. participated in the 2005 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NMCYA) - Guitar Category C and made it in the roster of finalists. He also won 2nd prize in the UST Guitar Competition in 2008 with his interpretation of "Harangang Taga" by Bayani Mendoza de Leo.
