Mystery disease killing buffaloes in Peren: Report

Villages appeal to govt for remedial measures for affected farmers

DIMAPUR, APRIL 20 (MExN): A fatal bovine disease is reportedly stalking buffaloes at Lamha-Dunki village area in Peren district and thereby causing panic among the farmers who employ the animal for tilling the fields.   According to a report from Dunki Village Council Chairman, Namgong, hundreds of buffaloes have already succumbed to the ‘mysterious’ disease in the Lamha-Dunki area and the neighboring villages. The report claimed that the animal die within days after being attacked by the ‘dreaded’ disease.
The matter was reported by alarmed farmers and buffalo owners to the village council and the SDO (Civil) of the area after which the veterinary department was called in.   However, there is still no sign of improvement even after the veterinary department administered vaccine to the animals, the Dunki Village Council lamented.   It pointed out that buffaloes are employed for ploughing of terrace field and is considered as the biggest assets for the farmers of the area.   In addition, with the season for cultivation of paddy closely arriving, the Dunki Village Council feared the worst as the disease continue to stalk the animal.   It has therefore appealed to the Nagaland Government to take up necessary remedies and support measures for the survival of the poor villagers.
