Naga Hoho ‘wary of delay tactics’

In a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ahead of the next round of talks set to take place in Amsterdam on May 19-20, the Naga Hoho has reiterated that enough representations/memorandum have been submitted to the Government of India, supplemented by occasional meetings with various Prime Ministers of India – to expedite the Indo-Naga talks, by expressing the desire of the Naga people to live together under one roof, as a non-negotiable struggle.

The Hoho recalled that various Naga civil societies and different political parties have also clearly expressed through different platforms/meetings their aspirations for the integration of the Naga contiguous areas, towards a sustainable peace;

It recalled “that the Government of India had recognized the unique situation and history of the Nagas and had committed itself to bring about a political solution between the two entities, which remains to be fulfilled”

Another reminder made to the Centre was that the Naga political negotiators have already submitted ‘instruments for bilateral coexistence to your good office,’ proposing an ending of violence and building of a secure relationship in this South/South-East Asian theatre.

“In as much, the Naga Hoho strongly believes that the mere and periodic extension of Indo-Naga ceasefire(s) without any conclusive political action will not produce any tangible security.

“Dr. Prime Minister, the Naga Hoho is constrained to bring to your kind notice that the Naga people are already wary of the delay tactics and non-committal diplomacy employed by your Government to engage the fate and future of the Nagas,” the apex Naga social organization said.

The Naga Hoho further regretted to inform that in the likely event of a breakdown in the Indo-Naga ceasefire, “given the manner in which procedural processes of the Indo-Naga political talks are conducted, the trust and confidence that has been so difficultly cultivated between Nagas and various leaders and civil societies of India will be just a matter of historical conjunction.” It said that the imminent spate of bloodshed and violence that will follow in Naga areas, as repercussions and war from the fall-out of the Indo-Naga talks and Ceasefire, “may be construed as a sole responsibility of Government of India – given the insensitiveness and lack of political wisdom in resolving the Indo-Naga situation.”

The Naga Hoho has expressed “the best of our peoples’ goodwill for your intervention at this moment of our times.”
