Naga orgs mourn demise of S Phakhami

Senapati, May 11 (NNN): United Naga Council (UNC), Naga Women Union (NWU) and All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), in a joint condolence message said that they were saddened at the loss of “S Phakhami on May 10, 2021 at RIMS, Imphal.”

According to the condolence message, Phakhami was someone who selflessly rendered his service in the Naga people’s movement for self-determination as a humble member of Naga People Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) for decades. “The news of his demise has rippled among us with deep sadness and created an irreplaceable void for the family and Nagas at large,” they added.

UNC, ANSAM and NWU acknowledged his “sincere service” to the Naga society as a “passionate steward” for the rights and welfare of the Tangkhul community and Naga people in general. Phakhami was instrumental in various movements launched by the Naga people in defending “our land, identity and history.”

In the midst of horrendous situation during early 1990s ethnic conflict, the message stated that S Phakhami was one of the people who worked tirelessly aiding the victims and organizing the youth for supporting the victims’ families in taking the remains of their loved ones home. “Risking his life, he visited villages that were attacked and razed to the ground, organized relief and also played a key role in the documentation relating to the conflict. His indispensable contribution in our journey will continue to remain in our memories,” it recalled.

They offered prayers and condolences to the bereaved family members and his relatives who will have to reconcile with his absence.
