Naga woman clears AOR exam

DIMAPUR, APRIL 3 (MExN): K. Enatoli Sema has become the first Naga to clear the Advocate-on-record (AOR) examination which is held annually under the general supervision of a Committee of three Judges of the Supreme Court who are appointed by the Chief Justice of India.

Enatoli (33) is the daughter of Justice H.K. Sema of Shenakusami village. She is currently the Standing Counsel for the State of Nagaland in the Supreme Court of India. Enatoli graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University after which she pursued a Law degree in the Faculty of Law, Campus Law Centre under the same University.

The crucial AOR examination is conducted by a board of Examiners who are nominated by the Committee of three Judges. The Board of examiners consists of eminent Senior Advocates who set and examine the papers. In order to pass the examination, a candidate must obtain minimum 50 % of marks in each paper and 60 % in the aggregate. Out of the 467 who registered for the AOR exam in June 2012, 66 candidates cleared the exam.

“Considering that this is the first time that a Naga has cleared this examination, I consider it a matter of great joy and honour,” she said. Appointed as the Standing Counsel for the state in 2008, Enatoli expressed deep gratitude to the Government for having given the opportunity to her. She has now completed seven years of active practice in the legal profession as a lawyer.
