Zunheboto, October 2 (MExN): The 30th Sumi Totimi general conference was held with Advisor H Khehovi as special guest, Dr Kalito Hokishe Kiho, Associate Professor & HoD Zunheboto Government College as guest of honour and Kakheli I Zhimomi, Women Secretary, WSBAK as the conference speaker at Suruhuto town on September 30.
A press release received here stated that in his address, the Advisor said “Mothers should play vital role in uniting the divided Sumis because God has created woman with the power of unity, love, care and peace.”
He said “Sumi Totimi were held most precious and valuable thus they used to be worn with most valued ‘Achiku-Achila’ and so she is presented the value of ‘avi’ (Avi-pimeh) as a nod for betrothal during her marriage hence, the practice of dowry in the earlier days.” He regretted that many youngsters today are not upholding the much value attributed to them anymore.
Khehovi also appeal the Sumi woman to erase traditional thinking such as, “woman are designed to work only between the four walls but venture out and live at par with the rest of the women in this competitive world because men today accept the equality of gender in all social life.” He requested the STH to conduct seminars especially in rural areas and inculcate the concept of gender equity.
