Nagaland a ‘transit route’ for smuggling opioid drugs

Kohima, March 3 (MExN): Nagaland is basically a transit route for smuggling of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances couriered by drug peddlers but the State Police has been intensifying its efforts to track its backward and forward linkages, an official release stated today. 

Most of the opioid drugs come via Manipur to Nagaland and exit to Assam through Dimapur, Nagaland Police stated in the release via its PRO.

However, the police has been aggressively taking proactive steps to tackle the menace of drug abuse and drug trafficking and such actions have resulted in registration of 217 cases have been registered and 309 persons arrested in the past one year, it said. 

As per the list of seizures made by the respective District Police and Narcotics Cell, PHQ, opioid painkiller, Spasmo Proxyvon continues to be the most seized drug in the State with recovery of 2,18,757 tablets. 

However, seizure of  YABA tablets, ‘mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine sold as cheap red or pink pills’ was also huge at 1,35,427.

Other significant seizures included Ganja- 2549.711 Kg; Opium - 91.722 Kg; Heroin - 8353.52 gram; Brown Sugar-17551.78 gram; Ganja -2549.711 Kg (see list). 

Under the dynamic leadership of DGP Nagaland, T John Longkumer, the State Police has been relentlessly and aggressively carrying out its enforcement duties to curb the menace of drugs and contraband goods from the society, the State Police maintained.    

Anti-Drug drives
To check the menace, the police have been conducting various anti-drug drives in all the districts, it said.   

The drives included drug enforcement activities as well as pre-emptive actions; disposal of drugs and vehicles seized; identification and destruction of illicit cultivation of narcotics crops; and awareness initiatives on drug abuse.

On the other end, drug seizures by intelligence collection and ‘Naka’ checkings; activities to target absconding drug traffickers and ‘bailees’ not attending court; identification and destruction of illicit cultivation of narcotics crops, and check on trafficking of Pharma drugs, have been increased, it added. 

To improve efficiency, the Nagaland Police has also initiated capacity building measures especially in use of IT systems both in human resources and technological support systems to aid the police personnel in detection of drugs, the release said. 

It further has reiterated that any person indulging in drug abuse or drug trafficking would be sternly dealt with, as per provisions under the Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
