Nagaland Bio – Resource Mission at glance

Kohima | January 24 : The Nagaland Bio- Resource Mission (NBRM) has been constituted by the state government to promote and develop the bio-resources of the state that will provide an alternative source of livelihood for the people.
The NBRM aims to adopt holistic approach to conserve, develop and utilize bio-resources of the state under the three main objectives- conservation of bio-resources, sustainable use of bio-resources and equity sharing benefits. To achieve the objectives, the mission has been implementing its activities under two scheme i.e state plan and centrally sponsored scheme under National Mission on medicinal plants.
An amount of ` 250.00 lakh and ` 136.00 lakh were received under state plan and centrally sponsored scheme under National Mission on Medicinal Plants respectively during 2009-10.
Some activities taken by the Mission includes, 22 awareness campaign through seminar for file functionaries and farmers in the district and block level, conducting training programmes on cultivation and post harvest management of the identified MAPs species in the block and village level, 48 villages Bio resource management committee were formed.
Attended AYUSH workshop in Shillong, NBRM members attended medical plants cultivation training organized by NEDFi at Guwahati, participated in expos and road shows for sensitizing the masses and sensitization through publications.
Under promotion and cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, it has established 8 nurseries in six districts, Agar (Aquilaria agallocha) cultivation has been taken up in 9 districts covering an area of 250 ha.
It has taken up Valeriana wallichii cultivation in Phek and Kohima district under an area of 50 ha and Paris polyphylla cultivation in Phek district in 30 ha. 80 ha. of Homalomena aromatica cultivation taken up in Mokokchung district, according to the annual administrative report of state’s land resources development.
