Kohima, April 27 (NEPS): Nagaland BJP President and Parliamentary Secretary MC Konyak in no uncertain terms made clear that “imposition of ban on conversion is unacceptable to the minorities” and further affirmed such imposition went against the constitutional tenets and spirit of democracy in the country.
Talking to NEPS here at his official residence today, the State BJP Chief said rather the “national interest and the welfare of the minorities should be safeguarded as enshrined in our Constitution.” He said the contributions of Christian leaders for the uplift of the downtrodden sections and solving various burning issues in the country including the northeastern region were immense. “In the northeastern India, the Christians have played crucial role even in bridging gap between the people of the region and the rest of the country,” he pointed out.
Requesting the BJP national President Rajnath Singh not to enforce such discriminatory acts especially in the northeastern states, Konyak urged him to propagate the party’s fundamental pledge of the “positive secularism, which is the guiding principle of the party.” He also said legislation should come up that “no discrimination should be made on the ground of religion.”
Konyak also criticized the appeasement policy of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Center, describing that the policy of granting “reservation” to Muslim on the ground of religion as “dangerous” to democracy. “Such policies of minoritism as practiced by the Congress-led UPA Government at the Center are unhelpful to Muslims themselves, besides being detrimental to the national integrity,” the BJP Chief cautioned.
He also strongly denied that “Christians are terrorists as alleged in some States in the country.” He asserted the Christians’ contribution to the country had really strengthened the social fabric of the country and further added that they were in no way against the integrity of the nation.
