Nagaland BJP welcomes passage of Agri Bills

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): The Nagaland State unit of the BJP has welcomed the passage of the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill in Parliament.

A press release from BJP Nagaland President, Temjen Imna Along said that the Bills will make farmers independent of government-controlled markets and fetch them a better price for their produce.

“It will create a system where farmers and traders can sell and produce products outside 'mandis'. It also encourages intra-state trade and proposes to reduce transportation costs. The Bills also formulates a framework on agreements that enable farmers to engage with agri-business companies, exporters and retailers for services and sale of produce while giving the farmers access to modern technology,” he stated.

The Nagaland BJP President said that they will also benefit small and marginal farmers. The Bills propose to remove items such as pulses and cereals from the list of essential commodities and attract FDI. Currently, 10 thousand Farmer Producer Organisations are being established which will connect with marginal farmers and will work towards providing them with better profit for their produce, he stated.

The Nagaland BJP assured that these legislations will transform the agriculture sector and raise farmer income, “which as promised by the Centre will double by 2022.”
