Nagaland braces for thunderstorms, rain from June 16–19

Kohima, June 15 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, has forecast light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several districts of Nagaland from June 16 to 19.

According to the NSDMA, thunderstorms with lightning are likely at isolated places in Dimapur, Kohima, Phek, Zunheboto, Kiphire and Peren districts on June 16, while other districts may experience light rain at a few places. The authority advised citizens to remain alert during thunderstorm activity.

On June 17, thunderstorms with lightning are expected at isolated places in Kohima, Wokha, Zunheboto, Mokokchung and Mon districts. Light to moderate rainfall is also likely across several districts, with localized rainfall activity expected throughout the State.

On June 18, thunderstorms with lightning are likely at isolated places in Kohima, Wokha and Mon districts, while intermittent light to moderate rainfall may continue over many districts.

For June 19, the NSDMA has forecast thunderstorms with lightning at isolated places in Dimapur, Kohima and Peren districts. Heavy rainfall may also occur at isolated locations in Peren district.

Residents living in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been advised to exercise caution due to the possibility of localized waterlogging and landslides.

While no widespread extreme weather event is anticipated, the NSDMA cautioned that isolated thunderstorms, lightning and localized heavy rainfall may pose risks to commuters and residents. The public has been advised not to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms, to stay away from water bodies during lightning activity, and to keep updated through official weather advisories.

The NSDMA also urged citizens to follow official weather forecasts and advisories and to use the NSDMA Weather website and the SAFER Nagaland App for real-time weather updates.
