Nagaland bye-elections: Campaigning closes, less than 48 hrs left for polls

As per the bye-election campaign period notified by the Chief Electoral Officer, all campaigning for the bye elections to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly from 14-Southern Angami-I (ST) Assembly Constituency and 60-Pungro-Kiphire (ST) Assembly Constituency came to an end from 4:00 pm on November 1.

With this, the hectic preparations for the polls amid the COVID-19 pandemic situation came to a close. According to the election authorities, strict SOPs, social distancing measures and preventive steps against COVID-19 would be implemented on the polling day.

Sanitisation of polling stations was also carried out by the Home Guards, Civil Defence and State Disaster Response Force Kohima on Sunday.

A total of eight candidates will contest the bye-elections to the two vacant seats in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly scheduled for November 3.

The 14 Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency will witness a showdown between Medo Yhokha from NDPP, Kikovi Kirha from NPF and Seyievilie Peter Zashumo as Independent Candidate.

In the 60 Pungro-Kiphire (ST) Assembly Constituency, six candidates qualified for the bye-election, following scrutiny. However Independent Candidate Lithriyem Dupongle withdrew his candidature, leaving only five candidates in the fray. The qualified candidates include the INC’s Khaseo Anar, BJP’s Lirimong Sangtam, Independent Candidates S Kiusumew Yimchunger, K Shellumthong Yimchunger and T Yangseo Sangtam.
