Nagaland bye-elections: CrPc 144 imposed within 14 Southern Angami-I AC

Kohima, November 2 (MExN): The District Magistrate, Kohima, Mohammed Ali Shihab A, in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code 1973, has restricted/prohibited the assembly and movement of more than 5 persons with effect from 6:00 pm on November 1 to 6:00 pm on November 4.

This order is promulgated and applicable only within the limits of 14-Southern Angami I (ST) Assembly Constituency, including the three Polling Stations area under Ward No 5 Kitsubozou (Chotobosti) in order to maintain peace and also to prevent spread of Coronavirus considering the continuing spike in COVID-19 cases in Kohima district with more symptomatic cases being reported, as per a DIPR report.

The order is also in line with the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India for conduct of elections during COVID-19 and in order to ensure ‘free, safe and peaceful’ bye-election to the 14-Southern Angami-I (ST) AC, and with the close of campaigns with just 48 hours left for poll.

Violation of the order will tantamount to punitive punishment under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, it added.
