Nagaland bypolls rescheduled to May 7

New Delhi, April 6 (Agencies): Bye-election to Aonglenden assembly seat in Nagaland has been advanced by a day to May 7 following a request from the state government, the Election Commission said on Wednesday. Election in this constituency was earlier scheduled for May 8. A request had been received from the state government either to advance or postpone the date of poll owing to certain administrative and other grounds, the EC said in a press note. The state government had requested the EC to change the polling date since Sunday would be inconvenient as voters, majority of them Christians in the constituency, would attend service in churches. After reviewing the matter, “The Commission has decided that the poll in the constituency shall take place on May 7 (Saturday) in place of May 8 (Sunday). The remaining schedule and dates will remain unchanged,” it said. By-election to Aonglenden was necessitated following the demise of Congress MLA Nungshizungba Longkumer last year.
