Nagaland celebrates environment day with plantations and plastic cleanups

Dimapur, June 7 (MExN): Asufii Christian Institute's Eco-Club launched an indigenous cherry tree plantation drive under the theme 'One Student, One Tree' on [date]. The 1.5-kilometer plantation stretch extended from Kapengho along the Kidimi interstate road to the ACI campus. Dr Lokho Chakre, Eco-Club Convener, led the initiative, while Principal Dr Daili Neli emphasised the dual benefits of planting native species: enhancing the local landscape while preserving biodiversity and cultural heritage. Each student adopted a sapling, pledging long-term care as part of the institute's environmental commitment.

Chuchuyimlang Student's Union.

Chuchuyimlang Student’s Union (CKT), in collaboration with Community Reserved Forest Committee Chuchuyimlang (CRFCC) and Mokokchung Forest Department, organised a tree-planting drive, successfully planting 200 saplings in the region. The event also included a plastic waste collection. The ceremony saw active participation from students, forest officials, and local community members. Meyimatsung, President, Chuchuyimlang Student’s Union, expressed gratitude to the Surep Lenden Club, Arujo Club, Tongpangsanger Club, and Rocky Club for their valuable contributions to the initiative.

District Child Protection Unit Mokokchung

District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) Mokokchung observed World Environment Day with the theme ‘Beat Plastic for Green Mokokchung.’ As part of the ‘Trade Waste for Green’ campaign (May 31–June 5), DCPU staff collected and recycled 16.75 kg of plastic waste and submitted to the Mokokchung Municipal Council’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF). Additionally, the team visited the Care & Support Children Home in Tsümarshiong, Chungtia, organising a plastic waste cleanup drive to promote environmental awareness among children.

Mongsen Ait Club, one of the oldest clubs from Mokokchung, primarily known for hosting the annual Mongsen Ait Marok, marked World Environment Day 2025 by organising a plantation drive at Longjang village. Hundreds of floral plants, partially donated by the Forest department, planted in and around the village vicinity, was launched from the village’s helipad site after a dedicatory prayer by youth pastor Sunep Aier. St Paul School, Purana Bazar, Dimapur, marked World Environment Day by addressing the urgent issue of plastic pollution and promoting sustainable alternatives. The event aimed to educate students and staff on plastic’s harmful environmental effects while empowering them to take action. The day began with a special assembly where teachers and students discussed the importance of World Environment Day and took a collective pledge to protect the environment. Activities included a plantation drive and campus clean-up, drawing and essay competitions on the theme ‘If I Were a Tree’ and creative reusing of plastic waste.

Field Management Unit, FNGO C-CERP, and JFMC Peren Batch II under NFMP Peren Division conducted plastic waste awareness and sensitization programme cum tree plantation drive at Old Peren village. The main speakers were Liangsi Niumai, Team Leader FNGO C-CERP and Siraibo Forester I, FMU Peren Range. Others who spoke were Liamchu, Chairman Village, Francis Salew Esho, Supervisor, Peren Range and Suibamle, Kesamsang, SHG. During the plantation drive about hundreds of tree saplings including Neem, Cherry, Pine and Hollock were planted in an open fallow land at Old Peren Village above the NFMP Nursery.

Care-Centre for Environment and Rural Poor (C-CERP), in collaboration with Mhainamtsi Village Council, organised an awareness programme at Mhainamtsi village, Peren District. The keynote address was delivered by Liangsi Niumai. Tree saplings were distributed to the participants. A plantation drive was also carried out in and around the Village Council Hall and ground area. Ziudi Thou, Village Chairman Mhainamtsi and Chamdin Newmai Ex. Chairman Mhainamtsi also spoke during the programme. Earlier on June 2, Mhainamtsi Village and C-CERP staffs during a consultative meeting pledged the slogan - “Ending plastic pollution and caring for his creation is honouring, God, therefore let us act wisely and live responsibly for our future generation.”
