The Nagaland chapter of the nationwide “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” was launched at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall, Wokha, on June 1, with a call for greater adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and improved soil health management.

The month-long awareness campaign, organised by ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Wokha, seeks to educate farmers on scientific farming techniques, balanced fertiliser application, organic farming, and climate-resilient agricultural practices aimed at ensuring long-term productivity and environmental sustainability.

Launching the programme, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, K Mhathung Tsanglao, underscored the importance of preserving soil health, describing soil as the backbone of agriculture and food production. He encouraged farmers to embrace organic farming practices and strive towards greater self-sufficiency in food production.

Highlighting the state’s agrarian nature, Tsanglao noted that agriculture remains closely linked to various entrepreneurial activities in Nagaland. He stressed that while crops continuously extract nutrients from the soil, equal effort must be invested in restoring fertility through proper manuring and the balanced use of fertilisers.

“Every soil has its own capacity and limitations. Maintaining its health through proper nutrient management is essential for sustaining agricultural productivity and preserving soil quality for future generations,” he said.

Speaking on the significance of the campaign, Head of ICAR–KVK Wokha, Dr. Sandeep Deshmukh, said the initiative aims to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods while ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture. He emphasised that healthy soil forms the foundation of resilient and productive farming systems.

Dr Deshmukh advocated the adoption of soil testing, balanced nutrient management, crop rotation, organic manures and bio-fertilisers as effective measures for restoring and maintaining soil fertility. He also encouraged farmers to reduce dependence on chemical inputs and adopt organic and natural farming methods that lower cultivation costs, improve food safety and protect the environment.

Calling for collective participation, he urged farmers to utilise KVK’s training programmes and advisory services to strengthen climate-resilient farming practices and contribute towards a self-reliant and food-secure agricultural sector.

As part of the programme, a technical session on organic farming and green manuring was conducted by Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Megokhono Meyase, who highlighted the role of green manure and organic inputs in enhancing soil fertility and ensuring sustainable crop production.

The programme was chaired by CTO Dr BL Mhalo and attended by Skill Development Officer Anuranjan Singh, officials from agriculture and allied departments, scientists, farmers and other stakeholders.

During the event, soil amendments and agricultural inputs were distributed to farmers to support soil health improvement and boost agricultural productivity across the district.
