KOHIMA, DECEMBER 6 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio led the state in mourning the passing of K. Zungkum Yimchunger, former minister of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), who passed away at Dimapur on December 6. He was 91 years old.
Born on December 1, 1932, in Sangphur village, Shamator district, K. Zungkum Yimchunger was a respected political leader and a four-time member of the NLA. His significant contributions to the state’s development, especially in the fields of education and vernacular media, have left an indelible mark. Beyond his political leadership, he was revered for his pioneering efforts in advancing the welfare of the Naga people.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio while expressing sadness over the passing of the former minister, described Zungkum as a "dedicated leader" who served the state with unwavering commitment. "His contributions to the development of Nagaland and his selfless service will always be remembered with profound respect and gratitude," Rio said. The CM offered condolences on behalf of the Government of Nagaland and his personal behalf to the grieving family.
Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Sharingain Longkumer, expressed deep sorrow at the loss, describing Zungkum as a "towering figure" in Naga history. Longkumer commended his contributions to education and his pioneering efforts to promote vernacular news, and steadfast commitment to the welfare of our people are truly commendable.

The Naga People’s Front (NPF) also joined in mourning Zungkum’s demise, describing him as a "visionary leader" and a "towering figure" in Naga politics. The party lauded his tireless work for the betterment of Nagaland and his unwavering dedication to the welfare of the Naga people, noting that his contributions to both the political and social landscape of the state would be remembered with great respect.
