Dimapur, September 4 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today assured the Nagaland Assembly that the government is committed to strengthening government schools, particularly high schools and higher secondary schools with low enrolment and poor performance.
The assurance came in response to a starred question by MLA Nuklutoshi on strategies for the “survival of government schools” on the second and final day of the 7th session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on September 4.
The Chief Minister detailed eight key initiatives by the Department of School Education to improve learning outcomes and overall school management.
These include the amalgamation of schools with low enrolment into composite schools for better resource utilisation, upgrading infrastructure and basic facilities, and professional development and capacity-building programmes for teachers.
To address the shortage of Maths and Science teachers, recruitment through the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) is underway, with postings expected shortly. Teacher deployment is being rationalised to balance staff across schools.
The School Leadership Development Program (SLDP) has been made mandatory for all school heads to improve institutional performance.
The government is also promoting community involvement by orienting members of School Management Committees (SMCs) and School Management Development Committees (SMDCs), ensuring local participation in school governance and development.
