Dimapur, November 12 (MExN): In observance of World Pneumonia Day, the respective district chief medical offices in Nagaland organised various programmes on November 12.
Phek: Phek observed World Pneumonia Day under the theme ‘Pneumonia Affects Everyone’ at District Hospital, Phek on November 12.
The programme was attended by Mechiethso EAC Phek, staff of CMO and District Hospital Phek.
Speaking on the theme, the resource person Dr Ngopelo Keviechu, SMO DH Phek said that World Pneumonia Day is observed every year to spread awareness and educate people to combat Pneumonia disease, which is a world biggest infectious killer of adults and children.
He highlighted the various factors affecting the increasing Pneumonia disease such as malnutrition, indoor air pollution, parental smoking etc. He talked on the traditional beliefs or myths on Pneumonia pertaining in the district which affects from seeking timely medical help. “Henceforth, education and spread awareness to the community to prevent, diagnose and treat pneumonia have become a priority,” he stated.
During the programme, social awareness and action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) campaign to be conducted from November 12 to February 28, 2023 was launched by Dr Khriezotuo Paphino, CMO Phek, during which he stated that all should be an ambassador in advocating Pneumonia preventable disease in our district.
The various activities to be carried out during the campaign such as sensitization/health talks during VHNDs/important events, miking, tracking of all drop outs/left outs etc. was presented by Sede, DPM NHM.
The programme was chaired by Dr Zhimatho, Sr Specialist DH, while the welcome address was delivered by Kutolu Nakro and vote of thanks was given by Zuvutho.

The CMO Office Mokokchung in a press release said that during the launching programme, Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC Mokokchung in his short speech said that though pneumonia is a preventable disease, due to lack of awareness precious children may loss their lives. Therefore, he called upon the members to educate and sensitize the community for timely intervention in preventing pneumonia.
Dr Imlisenba, Pediatrician IMDH in his presentation said that SAANs campaign is to prevent and control child deaths due to pneumonia. Through SAANs campaign government has initiated equal standard treatment protocols, capacity building, community awareness and mass media campaign etc, he added.
Dr Limatula Aier, Chief Medical Officer in her welcome speech stated that pneumonia is a common ailment among children which we take very lightly but the mortality of pneumonia is very high. She added, “If intervened at the right moment the morbidity of pneumonia can be reduced.”
The programme was chaired by Dr Limanaro, DPO (NCD) Mokokchung and attended by Medical officers, Department of Social welfare, DPMU and CMO staff.
Peren: District Health Society, Peren launched Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully (SAANS) and observed World Pneumonia Day at Jalukie Town Women Welfare Hall on November 12.
A press release stated here that Dr Hedungkiebe, DVBO chaired the programme and gave the welcome address. Dr Lanuakum, Dy CMO gave a presentation on SAANS. He gave a basic overview and goals of SAANS. He said the aim of the campaign is to ensure greater awareness and early detection of pneumonia in children under five of age. Pneumonia is a lung infection caused by bacterial, viral or fungal infection. He emphasized on accelerating action against Childhood Pneumonia by generating awareness on protection, prevention and treatment aspects of Childhood Pneumonia and to enhance early identification and care seeking behaviours among parents and caregivers.
Special Guest TL Kiusumong Tikhir (NCS) ADC & Administrator, Jalukie in his short speech thanked the health workers for their dedication and hard work in implementing various health activities across the district. He shared that all logistics needs will be provided and ready to help whenever required. He encouraged the participants to create more awareness about the signs and symptoms, Do's and Don't and join hands together to make the campaign successful.
The programme was also launched in Tening CHC and Ahthibung PHC. The programme was attended by officials from Administration, Social Welfare department, Health Workers, and ASHA's.
