Nagaland is currently following the Nagaland Sports Policy, 2012, which serves as the existing policy framework for the promotion and development of sports in the state, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio said in the state Assembly.
Rio made the statement in reply to a starred question raised by A Nyamnyci Konyak during the ninth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in Kohima on September 1.
The Chief Minister said the policy provides for promotion of sports at the grassroots level, identification and nurturing of sporting talent, development of sports infrastructure, provision of coaching and training facilities, participation in state, national and international competitions, support to recognised sports associations, and encouragement and recognition of outstanding sportspersons.
On provisions for incentives and recognition of sportspersons who win medals at national and international levels, Rio said the Department of Youth Resources and Sports provides incentives and recognition to meritorious sportspersons as provided under the Nagaland Sports Policy, 2012.
Cash awards are provided to sportspersons who win medals at recognised international, national and zonal/North East competitions in various sports disciplines affiliated to and recognised by the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA), he said.
Cash incentives are also provided for special sporting feats, wherever applicable, Rio added.
