Nagaland COVID: Numbers continue drop but positivity still high

Nagaland reported 33 COVID-19 cases during the week (January 16-22), dropping to less than half of what was reported the previous week. 17 were traced contacts, 8 were armed forces personnel and 8 others were travelers. 

 It also marked the fifth consecutive time, the weekly case-total fell below hundred.  

According to the weekly COVID roundup published by the state Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Health & Family Welfare on January 23, it was detected from a total of 1098 samples returning a positivity rate of 3 percent as opposed to the 7 percent sample positivity rate recorded the previous week. 

The positivity rate on the whole was high at 9.7 percent against the national average of 5.5 percent. 

The testing rate improved to 60.7 tests per thousand population from the previous week’s 60.1. It was however less than half of the country rate of 141.7 tests per thousand. 

There was no change in the recovery rate, which remained at 97.2 percent. The recovery rate, country-wide was 96.8 percent. 

No death was reported from the week, while the mortality rate unchanged at 0.65 percent against the country’s 1.4 percent. 

The IDSP cautioned that the numbers might be dropping but “Going back to our normal lives safely will need discipline and maintenance of COVID-19 appropriate behaviors like wearing mask, washing hands frequently and maintaining physical distancing along with vaccination of the population till and when a certain level of Immunity is achieved in the population.”

While stating that vaccines and COVID-19 appropriate behaviours are the safest route back to the normal lives, it called for immediately isolating and getting help “if you have any covid-19 like symptoms or if you come in contact with a positive case,” adding, “Let us protect ourselves and the vulnerable people in the community by being more careful and responsible.”
