Mokokchung Deputy Commissioner Thsuvisie Phoji urged Dobashis across Nagaland to uphold integrity, trustworthiness, and truthfulness in their roles. He was addressing the introductory session of the Nagaland Dobashi Association’s 22nd Triennial Conference cum 63rd Anniversary Celebration 2025 as the Chief Host at P. Shilu Park, Mokokchung on January 16.

Tracing the origins of the Dobashi institution to the British era in 1841, Phoji highlighted how it was built on a foundation of values, with appointees known for their integrity, linguistic skills, and trustworthiness. Reflecting on history, he remarked, “Many Dobashis have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. While the challenges faced by the current generation are different, the essence of the role remains the same.”

He expressed concern about modern practices, noting that earlier, Dobashis were appointed based on their values and trustworthiness, not through political influence or familial connections with high-ranking officials. He urged Dobashis to reject nepotism and to steer clear of divisive “isms,” stating, “You are the eyes, ears, hands, and feet of the administration. Adapt to the changing times, but let your integrity and trustworthiness remain constant.”

Phoji further advised Dobashis to refrain from consuming intoxicants during their duties, stressing that their actions shape public perceptions. He encouraged self-discipline, urging them to restore and maintain the esteemed image of their institution.

To the attendees from various districts, Phoji said, “Take the best of what you see and experience in Mokokchung and leave behind the negatives.”

The two-day conference, held under the theme “Strengthening the Spirit of Naga Customary Laws and Its Practices,” will conclude on January 17.

The inaugural session was chaired by Imolangba, District Head Dobashi, Mokokchung, with NDBA President Vikheho Sema delivering the Presidential Address. A brief speech was given by the President of the GB’s Association, Mokokchung, and the Kohima District Dobashis performed a traditional tune.

The plenary session on January 17 will feature Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang as the Special Guest and K.S. Anden Konyak, IAS, Commissioner Nagaland, as the Chieftain. T.N. Mannen (Retd. IAS), Advisor for Law & Justice and Land Revenue, will grace the valedictory session as the Honoured Guest.
