Nagaland Economics & Statistics releases 4th edition of new Consumer Price Index

Nagaland Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Evaluation and Economics & Statistics Advisor L Khumo on Thursday released the annual price bulletin 2021 published by Directorate of Economics & Statistics (DoE&S), Nagaland.

This was released during a workshop on Statistical Activities of various Departments under Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS) 2021-2022 here at DES Conference Hall.

The annual price bulletin for the year 2021 is the 4th edition of the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) for rural, urban and combined using the base year 2010= published by the Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland. The department has done away with the old CPI of Urban Non- Manual Employee (UNME) using the base year 1981-82=100.

In preface, Neidilhou Angami, Additional Director & HoD, Economic & Statistics, Nagaland, stated “The new CPI was developed basing on the National Sample Survey (NSS) 66th Round State Report for the Consumer Households Expenditure Survey.”

Altogether, 105 items in rural sector, 130 items in urban sector and 131 items in combined sector are included in the weighing diagram.

Under the new series, the prices of 238 items (both weighted and un-weighted) are collected   from all the 11 districts covering 13 urban price centres and 22 rural price centres on weekly basis.

The wholesale prices are collected from the Dimapur Urban Centre.

“This publication includes price data of wholesale price of consumer goods, relative movement of retail prices of consumer goods, non-consumer goods, building materials and consumer price index,” stated Neidilhou.

He acknowledged all the District Economics & Statistics Officers and staff for collecting the required price data in the district price cetres and also placed on record the contribution rendered by the price section in bringing out the publication.

Neidilhou hoped that the data contained in the publication will be useful for policy planners, administrators, research scholars and general public.
 
Highlights of Annual Price Bulletin 2021
General Indices: The General indices for the year 2020 for Rural, Urban & Combined are 142.65, 136.30 and 138.29 which show and increased rate of 42.65%, 36.30% and 38.29% respectively over the base year period. In comparison with 2019 indicates at 127.95, 125.12 and 124.89, indices have shown an increasing rate of 11.48%, 8.12% & 10.72 % for rural, urban and combined respectively.

Consumer Food Price Index: The Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) is the index showing the price movement of all the food items (excluding the non-alcoholic beverages and prepared meals, etc) during the period. The CFPI for Rural, Urban & Combined are 144.50, 143.00 & 142.45 showing an increased rate of 44.50%, 43.00% and 42.45% respectively over the base year period. The CFPI has increased by 12.42%, 12.61% & 12.53% for Rural, Urban and Combined respectively over the 2019 indices.

Food Group Indices: The Food group indices for Rural, Urban & Combined are 141.85, 139.70 & 139.68 indicating an increased rate of 41.85%, 39.70% and 39.68% respectively over the base year period. Food indices have increased by 11.90%, 11.54% & 11.77% for Rural, Urban and Combined respectively over the 2019 indices.

Indices of Pan, Supari, Tobacco: The indices of Pan, Supari, Tobacco and Intoxicants for Rural, Urban and Combined have increased from 144.6, 133.54 & 144.44 in 2019 to 183.39, 166.38 & 185.30 in 2020, showing increased rate of 26.82% in rural, 24.59% in urban and 28.28% in combined. The indices have increased by 83.39%, 66.38% & 85.3% over the base year period.

Fuel and Light: Fuel and Light increases by 40.44 %, 32.50%, 32.50% and 28.14% in Rural, Urban and Combined respectively over the base year period. The indices for Rural, Urban and Combined have increased by 2.72%, 0.22% & 1.25% over the year 2019 indices.

Clothing, Bedding: The indices of Clothing and Bedding for Rural, Urban and Combined are 149.76, 135.53 & 144.69 indicating an increasing rate of 49.76%, 35.53% and 44.69% respectively over the base year period. The indices in rural and combined have increased by 9.8% & 5.98 % over the 2019 indices. In Urban areas the index has slightly decreased by -0.26& over the 2019 index.

Miscellaneous Group: Under Miscellaneous group, the indices have increased by 35.84%, 21.03% and 26.32% for Rural, urban and Combined respectively over the base year period 2010. Similarly, for all the sectors i.e. Rural, Urban and Combined the indices increased by 5.46%, 1.0% and 4.06% respectively over last year indices.
