Nagaland: Educational institutes celebrate Women’s day

The Women’s cell of Model Christian College organised a programme to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. Speaking as the special guest, entrepreneur and proprietor of Glam House Boutique Veduvolu Khusoh shared her life experiences of venturing out to different countries starting her own business in a foreign country. Addressing gender equality, she emphasized that gender equality does not mean women are superior to men but rather it is a movement that desires equal treatment. She also mentioned that leadership and competence have no gender and expressed her desire to see fifty percent representation in all important spheres.

A one-day seminar-cum-celebration of International Women’s Day was held at Modern College, Kohima on March 8 by the college’s Anti- Sexual Harassment Cell and Gender Champion Club in collaboration with Kohima District Legal Service Authority. Held on the theme ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow,’ the first session included an extempore speech competition where Pangteang K Konyak and Tokiho Achumi were adjudged first prize winners while the second and third prizes went to Atoto K Chishi and Beyau K respectively. The second session featured talks on cyber crimes and laws, protection of women under the Constitution of India and criminal law as well as mental health and women.

Patkai Christian College (PCC) observed International Women’s Day at the Bundrock hall, PCC under the theme ‘gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.’ It was organised by Women Cell and Gender Champion, PCC. Dr Jyoti Roy, senior faculty, English Department was the guest speaker. Students from Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication performed a skit titled ‘You can’t spell Hero without her’. St Joseph University Nagaland, Department of Psychology and Counselling & Globethics.Net India jointly organized a blended mode international panel discussion on ‘Gender Equality Today for a sustainable Tomorrow: Status of Women Today with Reference to North-East India’ on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day. Various speakers highlighted the importance of ending gender discrimination around the world and encouraged the participants to create awareness about the rights of women against abuse, harassment, violence, inequality etc., and to take action for gender equality. The session also included a Q&A segment. 

In honour of International Women's Day on March 8, Dionysia, the Drama club of St John College, in collaboration with the Anti-Ragging, Sexual harassment and Women’s cell committees, organised a short pantomime act inspired by a popularly shared cartoon. In addition to the live performance, a video on 'Breaking the Bias' was recorded with messages from Setuomenuo Ao, the Director of St John college, Prof ST Janetius, principal, faculty members and the students of the college all coming together as one to celebrate women's achievement in the society till today. The Women Cell, Tetso College observed International Women’s Day on the theme ‘Celebrate Women’ with Temjenkala Aier, Founder and CEO of Emporium Skills Training Institute, Dimapur as the guest speaker on March 8. The guest speaker focused her speech towards empowering women through skill development and capacity building and also discussed prospects of entrepreneurship by taking the example of Emporium Skills Training Institute and how it has led to the employment of hundreds of Naga youth. 

The NSS & RRC Units, Tetso College celebrated International Women's Day with the female students and teachers of Government Middle School Sugarmill, Dimapur. The team of 5 students and 2 teachers gave a short awareness talk on the themes of gender equality and menstrual hygiene and also distributed sanitary pads to the female students and teachers. The team also donated sanitary pads to the Women Cell, Tetso College. A poster exhibition for the same was also done in the college campus.

Pranabananda Women’s College in collaboration with Community Health Initiative celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8. On the occasion, Nengneithem Hengna, Founder of Runway Nagaland was felicitated for her contribution towards society as an entrepreneur and for giving a platform for women to be financially independent. Author Alokali Zhimomi and Livingstone Foundation International Chairperson Dr Andrew Ahoto exhorted the students in various topics while Orentsani Kikon, founder of Orentsani Asthetic Fitness and her team led the yoga demonstration session to cope with menstrual health. The programme ended with free distribution of sanitary pads to the students.

Phek Government College along with the rest of the world celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8 under the theme ‘Break the Bias’ with various events. Dr Thejotalu Nienu, Asst Prof, Dept of Economics and Convener Women Development Cell PGC, gave a presentation on the history of International Women’s Day initiated by Clara Zetkin while Vice Principal Shapalu Suyie gave away the cash prizes along with citations to the winners of the online slogan writing competition organised by Red Ribbon Club, PGC in commemoration of the IWD on the theme ‘Gender Equality today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.’
