Dimapur, June 6 (MExN): In commemoration of World Environment Day under the theme ‘Only One Earth’ on June 5, schools and educational institutions in Nagaland marked the day by organising a bevy of programmes and initiatives within their respective areas.  

CHA: Charis High Academy organised various competitions such as Talking Titans (Extempore Speech), Film Focus, Brilliant Brushes and Waste Make Over. Participating schools were Gonyu Memorial School, Cosmopolitan School, Rincho Academy, Delhi Public School, Hollotoli School, St Joseph Hr Sec School and Greenwood School. 

Immanuel College: The Eco Club of Immanuel College observed a three-day event from June 1 to 3 at the college campus. On the first two days the club conducted poster-making and video messages conveying general awareness of environment. On the third day, sapling distribution and cleanliness drive were carried out. Principal Sharatchandra Singh planted the sapling in the college campus followed by distribution of saplings in and around the neighbourhood area. 

ICFAI: The Green Club and Electoral Literacy Club of ICFAI University organized a plantation at its campus on June 4. The drive was initiated by Kelel Theyo, Asst Librarian & In-charge of Green Club and Dr Nukshimenla, Asst Professor, Department of Political Science. Students, Faculty Members and members from Sovima Village Youth Organisation which contributed over hundred saplings for the event took part in it.

KLC: Kohima Law College observed World Environment Day–cum- social work on town beautification putting up 40-50 pots on the side wall of Kohima main town with flowers and green plants on June 3.           

Lions Club: Lions Club of Dimapur, Japfu observed the day along with the students of St Marys Hr Sec School on June 5 at the school campus. Drawing competition along with tree plantation was conducted to spread awareness about the environment among the students.

MHBHSS: Ministers Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School (MHBHSS) with the theme ‘Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature,’ presented various innovative ideas and solutions for sustainable living, followed by plantation drive at the DC Bungalow, Kohima. A cleanliness drive at the school vicinity was also held wherein all the students, school managing board and the teachers actively participated. 

MITE: Modern Institute of Teacher Education, Kohima observed the day on June 4 at the college auditorium under the initiative of the Eco club and Aesthetic club. Additionally, the Eco club and Aesthetic club members presented saplings to the college for plantation with pots. 

VHHSS: Vision Home Higher Secondary School, Chümoukedima initiated tree plantation drives in the vicinity of Central Jail, Diphupar, Chümoukedima along with NSS Volunteers The students also conducted plantation drives in the school premises as a donation-cum-social work. 

RKS: Rajeshwari Karuna School, Tuli in collaboration with e-CIRCLE, Saahas, and Hulladek Recycling Pvt Ltd organised workshop and essay competition. The resource persons were Sowete-ü K Letro and Bendangwala Walling. In addition, the students led by the teachers had a waste-to-art activity where they up-cycled old clothes, paper waste, and plastics into reusable items. The school planted trees around the campus in partnership with the 13th NAP IR Battalion posted at Yajang C. 

SCL: Salt Christian College community service committee organised a cleanliness and plantation drive in East Police colony, Dimapur on June 4. Students and teachers of the college along with the residents of the colony took active part in the activity.

SASRD: The School of Agricultural Sciences & Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus, organised World Environment Day on June 3 by the Student Welfare in-charge, Prof Pauline Alila & NSS (SASRD Unit) in-charge, Dr S Bhanik with active support from SU:SASRD and Prof Tongpang Longkumer who facilitated in obtaining the tree saplings. The tree saplings were distributed to all departments, hostels, offices and farms where the teaching, non-teaching staff and students planted in their respective areas. A massive cleaning drive was also undertaken in the campus.

NSC: Nagaland Science Centre, Department of Science and Technology celebrated World Environment Day by conducting various activities such as seminar, students' paper presentation and sapling plantation was organised with participation from various schools.

SJU: Department of Social Work, St Joseph University, Chümoukedima in collaboration with Act of Kindness Society conducted a tree plantation drive on account of World Environment Day on June 4, at Northern Angami colony Dimapur

BBP: Eco-Club of Bethel Baptist School organised a plantation drive. It was led by Kumjimong eco club in-charge and speaker was Mhasizonuo Angami, Senior Scientific Assistant, Nagaland Pollution Control Board. The NPCB also presented two waste bins to the school.

YMC: Members of Eco-club and NCC Unit of Yemhi Memorial College planted trees, making placards with slogans raising environmental awareness, and cleaning the neighborhood. 

HMC: HMC High School Dimapur initiated planting of saplings, cleanness drive and a number of competitions organised at the school in order to highlight the awareness, the need to protect environment and to maintain ecological balance.

SCHE: Students of Salesian College of Higher Education planted around 100 Arjun and Mahogany tree saplings in the college campus along Dhansiri river, while others took part in the environmental cleanliness drive with the Kuda-A, village youths. 

UCTE: Unity College of Teacher Education (UCTE) second semester students/teachers (2021-2023 Batch) conducted a seminar and an open quiz was arranged for all participants. A street play was performed in the college open grass area by the second semester students/teachers.

GMS Leshemi: Government Middle School (GMS) Leshemi teachers and students planted over 300 different plants around the school and at the roadside of Leshemi village. The plants were donated by the Forest Department. 

St Mary’s Kohima: St Mary’s Cathedral Higher Secondary School, Kohima observed the day on June 3 in collaboration with the Eco Club and Heritage Club.

The chief guest, Rovilatuo Mor, IAS, Commissioner Nagaland apprised the students about ‘Definition of Environment’ and Living Sustainable in Harmony with Nature while the guest of honour, Sukho Movi initiated a workshop for Higher Secondary Students on ‘Recycling of waste materials.’

In account for the students to experience a “Bagless Class” and exclusively on “participation”, the school also conducted activities on ‘germination of seeds’, ‘exhibition of fresh flowers/plants’, ‘drawing competition on nature’s beauty’, ‘crafting with seeds and nuts’, ‘waste management’, competitions on slogan writing and video making. The NCC students conducted plantation drive around the school campus. 

Azedon School: Azedon School, Kohima organised painting competition for students from classes 8 to 10 on June 6. The students and teachers took part in plantation drive and making paper bags from old newspapers. A short programme was also organized in the school highlighting the importance of nature conservation, sustainable development, health hazard of air pollution and climate change and on the importance of spreading awareness and on being responsible citizens.
