Nagaland Electoral Roll revision schedule draft out

Dimapur, Feb 27 (MExN): In preparations for the coming state assembly elections 2008, the Election department, Government of Nagaland, has drafted the schedule for the proposed revision of electoral rolls for 2007, tentatively scheduled from April 2, 2007 and expected to be completed by June 18, 2007. A copy of the draft, which was made available to The Morung Express, highlighted the schedule from draft publication, disposal of claims and objections to final publication of electoral rolls.  The revision schedule addressed to Secretary of Election Commission of India K Ajaya Kumar from CJ Ponraj Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, is in reference to the EC’s requesting the CEO’s office to work out a draft schedule for the electoral roll revision.

The CEO, in the draft compendium to the EC, suggested that since the summary revision is just over, the revision, be undertaken in the middle of the year (2007). The schedule is subject to the approval of the Election Commission.

Meanwhile, in response to the front page report in The Morung Express, February 27 edition, the CEO’s office has clarified that the revision of Electoral Roll is done either summarily or intensively in pursuance of the Representation of People’s Act 1950 and Registration of Electoral Rules, 1960. The revision for the current year 2007, will not affect the ongoing bye-elections in Dimapur-1 and 54 Tuensang Sadar-II Assembly constituencies. For the ensuing bye-elections, the electoral rolls revised during the year 2006 and published on November 23, 2006 shall continue to be in force as notified by the Election commission on February 10, 2007. As such there will not be any revision of electoral Roll before the bye-elections, stated a clarification issued by Teiso Tungoe, Deputy Chief Electoral Officer.

Clarification
This is to clarify, that reliable sources aware of the proceedings in the Kohima February 26 meeting between the CEO and the DCs of Dimapur and Tuensang respectively in regard to the elections, had emphasized to The Morung Express that revision of the Electoral Rolls would be undertaken before the bye-elections to the two mentioned A/Cs. As such, the news report was based on the information provided by the source. Still, if there is any oversight, the correction is acknowledged.

The proposed schedule of revision as drafted by the Election department is as follows.
