Nagaland: Embattled Congress party goes on the defensive

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 2 (MExN): As the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) suffered another setback on November 1 with its Dimapur unit President, office bearers and other frontal body members joining the NPF party led by MP Neiphiu Rio, the central unit of the NPCC today went on the defensive.

On Wednesday, the Dimapur District Congress Committee President, office bearers, district Mahila and Youth Congress and some ACCC members had resigned from the party. The decision to this end was reportedly taken during a meeting on October 30.

In the face of this crisis, the NPCC media cell today stated that “the defection of some disgruntled party workers in Dimapur to join hands with corrupt and divided NPF bandwagon is a welcome step since the Congress party has been silently tolerating the activities of these political turncoats since 2013 and also in the ULB election, hoping that better sense will prevail.”

The DDCC members who resigned on Wednesday had in a joint statement however stated that the move to resign from the Congress was made due to the dictatorial attitude of the PCC President, which had brought about many differences.

They had further said that the decision to join the Neiphiu Rio led group of the NPF was taken keeping in mind the desire for an early and acceptable solution to the Indo-Naga issue.

The NPCC, in its statement today meanwhile claimed that the AICC had “long ago directed the NPCC to take drastic measures in overhauling the entire party setup in the state and especially in Dimapur to shed the deadwoods that have become liability.”

It informed that the NPCC had appointed A Bendangyanger Jamir as the new President of Dimapur DCC on October 17 and had “specifically tasked him to revamp the entire Dimapur DCC.”

The NPCC termed the recent wave of resignations from its Dimapur unit as a case of certain leaders “finding that there is going to be no more space for people sailing in two boats…” It alleged that “some few disgruntled party workers led by the former President have misguided some of the party workers into joining an already rotten boat of NPF that is sinking on its own weight.”

It further affirmed that the Dimapur District Congress Committee is “intact and fully functional under the Presidentship of Bendangyanger Jamir.”

The NPCC added that “Nagaland and especially the people of Dimapur desperately need freedom from fear, protection of livelihood and better infrastructures in tune with the rapid urbanization.” It urged the people of the state to “come forward and join hands with Congress to rid the state of mass corruption and unbearable taxation that has destroyed our simple and honest way of life.”

The Congress, it claimed, “shares the agony of our people whose voices are never heard and are bearing the brunt of misgovernance in every sphere of life.”

Meanwhile, the DDCC has informed all officials and party workers to attend the dedicatory programme of the newly appointed DCC President and Working President on November 4 at 11:00am at Congress Bhavan, opposite East Police Station, Dimapur.
