Dimapur, August 3 (MExN): The Nagaland Excise Department has registered 79 offences and seized approximately 3,480 bottles of assorted Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and canned beer during an intensive enforcement drive conducted across Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland districts in July 2026.
The coordinated operations, carried out by the Narcotic Cell, Mobile Squad and District Excise units, targeted suspected hotspots including restaurants, bars and other commercial establishments, resulting in the closure of some outlets and the realisation of Rs 2,16,000 as penalty, which has been deposited into the government treasury with proper challan, according to a press release issued by Joint Commissioner of Excise (NC) S Phyobemo Kikon.
The seized articles have been confiscated and kept in the malkhana to be destroyed at a later stage after obtaining an official order from the Destruction Board or Committee constituted for the purpose, it stated.
The department has been at the forefront of enforcing prohibition laws and curbing the menace of illicit liquor and drug trafficking in the state since the early 1990s, and despite severe constraints in manpower, logistics and infrastructure, has maintained a consistent and sustained enforcement drive spanning over three decades, the release said.
From 1990 onwards till date, the department has registered numerous offence reports running into several lakhs involving seizure of IMFL, illicit liquor, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, reflecting its unwavering commitment to upholding the law, it added.
On an average, not less than 13-15 cases are detected every single working day, translating to over 4,000-5,000 cases annually, which clearly demonstrates that enforcement has been continuous, proactive and intelligence-driven, rather than sporadic, the release said.
The department cautioned that it will be conducting thorough inspections and surprise raids to detect unlawful possession, sale and distribution of liquor in the days to come and advised outlet operators to refrain from such illegal activities.
