Along with the rest of India, prices of diesel and petrol remained unchanged for second consecutive day in Nagaland and the products were retailing at October 17 rates across the State on October 19.

The two-day break came after a series of steep daily hikes in recent times including a fourth straight hike till Sunday.

As reported earlier, diesel was just one revision away from psychological Rs 100-a-litre threshold in three districts of Nagaland on Sunday with highest in Tuensang at Rs 99.73 a litre, followed by Rs 99.70 in Kiphire and Rs 99.65 in Noklak.

In Mon and Phek district, prices were above Rs 99 per litre while in four districts, diesel was above Rs 98.  In State capital Kohima, it was Rs 97.52 per litre while diesel was ‘cheapest’ in Dimapur at Rs 96.72.

As per the fuel prices in Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) outlets across Nagaland on IndianOil One app, the same rates prevailed on October 19.

Meanwhile, a litre of petrol in Tuensang and Kiphire are currently retailing at record Rs 107.64 and Rs 107.56 respectively.  It must be noted here that a litre of petrol first crossed the Rs 100-a litre in the two districts mark on June 26, while Dimapur was to breach the mark on July 15.

As per the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Gas, while the retail prices of fuel are fixed by the oil marketing companies (OMCs) on the basis of 15 days rolling average price of petrol and diesel in the international market while there is also an impact by the rupee dollar exchange rate.

Several others factors determine the final retail prices including central and state taxes including cess, dealer’s commission, and freight charges, and as a result, prices differs across states or regions.

The price differences across Nagaland can also be attributed to these factors.

Meanwhile, IANS news agency reported  on Tuesday that consumers could expect relief from the surging price of auto fuels as the government may opt for an “excise duty cut on petrol and diesel, for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic.”

“Sources said that Rs 2-3 per litre cut in excise duty on petrol and diesel might be announced as a shield to prevent a further spike in prices of auto fuels,” it added.
