Nagaland gets ready for World Bamboo Day

Dimapur, August 3 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today held a special review meeting in connection with the upcoming World Bamboo Day celebrations to be held in Kisama, under Nagaland’s Kohima district during 16th to 18th September, 2010.

The Chief Minister took out an on-the-spot visit of various facilities that are to be used during the event including the ongoing construction works for the World Bamboo Day. Kamesh Salam, President of World Bamboo Organization (WBO) and Director of CBTC briefed the meeting on various aspects of the three-day meet and the activities that would take place in Nagaland.

It was also informed that the Vice President of India, H. Hamid Ansari, would be the chief guest on World Bamboo Day, on 18th September. The state government is expecting participation from several countries and other states of India. 

Chief Ministers and Governors of all North Eastern states have been invited to participate in the celebrations. The World Bamboo Congress is planning to honour selected entrepreneurs and craftsmen who have excelled in the use of bamboo and its applications on World Bamboo Day.

Some of the programmes which will be held during the three day meet include a North East Level Crafts Bazaar with special focus on bamboo which will include live demonstrations on usage of bamboo in crafts and textiles. 

Other programmes include a fashion extravaganza highlighting the use of bamboo in the modern fashion industry, a bamboo exhibition and cultural shows, food festival and a Bamboo Investors Meet and music shows. 

The President of WBO informed that investors, entrepreneurs and leaders of bamboo applications from different parts of the world and the country would participate in the investors meet. 

Kamesh Salam also informed that another highlight of the event will be the live demonstrations on bamboo technologies using modern machineries, which will be shipped into Nagaland just for the meet. 

This feature will be a first of its kind as machines will be set up at Kisama to showcase the methods of treating, splitting and compressing bamboo using modern machines.

A special bamboo event is also being planned in Dimapur, Nagaland’s commercial hub, to coincide with the celebrations. Plantation drives will also be conducted to commemorate the World Bamboo Day while the Nagaland Olympic Association will conduct a half marathon to commemorate the day. The President of WBO informed that the day would be celebrated in different continents however the celebrations in Nagaland would be most elaborate.

Mention may be made that the Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio had addressed the inaugural function of the World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok, Thailand as the Guest of Honour in 2009. 

The upcoming international event is being billed as a major occasion not just for the State but also for the rest of the region and will once again emphasize the fact that Nagaland has been a leading State in the use and promotion of bamboo as a sustainable resource for economic benefits.
