The Nagaland Gorkha Association (NGA) held its second session general meeting in Mokokchung, hosted by the Gorkha Union Mokokchung, on September 4 at the Gorkha Community Hall, Mokokchung.
Nagaland Gorkha Association was formed in the year 2000 with the main objective to fight for the rights of Indigenous Gorkhas, NGA President Nobin Pradhan stated.
The main demand of the Nagaland Gorkha Association was the recognition of Gorkha community as OBC. He asserted that it is next to impossible for the graduate and post students of the Gorkha community to sit for competitive exams under the central government as general category, against the mainland Indians. He also added, they have been carrying this issue to the Government of Nagaland, since 1995 to three Chief Ministers namely, SC Jamir, Shürhozelie Liezietsü and TR Zeliang.
An MoU was also submitted in the year 2017, to which, the Government of Nagaland gave a response letter saying, the issue is a matter of the Central government, hence, decision cannot be taken by the state Government.
Pradhan also added that in the year 2021, the 127th Amendment Bill which gives the state Government, the power to make their own OBC list was passed. With reference to this bill, he expressed a note of positivity that the State Government will meet the demand of the Gorkhas, sympathetically. Another concern that he shared on behalf of the Gorkha community was, if when the solution arrives between the Government of Indian and GPRN, they will be treated with the same love and brotherhood.
The meeting was attended by delegates from all the districts and towns of Nagaland
