Nagaland Gov and others greet on Aoleang, Kundaglün & Phom Monyu

Kohima, April 1 (MExN): The Governor of Assam and Nagaland, Prof Jagdish Mukhi has extended festival greetings. 

Prof Mukhi extended Aoleang greetings to Konyak brothers and sisters and to the people of Nagaland. It is an occasion for the Konyak community to pray for a bountiful harvest. It is also a time to reminisce the past journey through their ancient culture and traditions which are beautifully displayed during the festival. “The celebrations aim to promote peace and progress of our society. It is important for the youth of the community to acquaint themselves with the rich customs and traditions through celebrations of this premier festival year after year,” the Governor said. 

He extended Kundaglün greetings to Chang brothers and sisters and to the people of Nagaland. Kundangltin literally means festival commemorating the completion of field's hut. Prayers are made for a bountiful harvest. A significant part of the festival is that the celebrations provide a platform for the Youth to get acquainted with the spiritual and cultural richness of the Changs, he added. 

Bringing Phom Monyu greetings to the people of Nagaland especially to Phom brothers and sisters, the Governor said during this occasion, Phom community seeks blessings for a bountiful harvest. Love, compassion, friendship and forgiveness are the significant essence of the festival. It is important to uphold the tradition of teaching ancient customary practices to the Youth during this time.

The Governor also urged everyone to celebrate festivals keeping in mind COVID- 19 protocols. 

NSCN (R): The NSCN (R) through its MIP conveyed greetings to the Konyak, Phom and Chang Nagas on the occasion of 'Aoleang Mongyu (Konyak) Phom Monyu (Phom) and Kundaglun (Chang)' festivals which coincides with each other and is celebrated during April 1-3.

It stated that Aoleang Mongyu is a major festival of the Konyak Nagas. It is a spring festival celebrated by the Konyaks in the first week of Aoleang lee (April).  The festival is celebrated to mark the end of the old year and to welcome the New Year beginning with Spring. The Konyaks wish for fruitful year and a bountiful harvest during Aoleang festival.

Phom Monyü festival is celebrated by the Phom Nagas to celebrate the arrival of New Year, with the beating of log drums with distinct tune traditionally called “Lan Nyangshem”. One interesting feature of the Monyü festival is that men folk shows respect to their married daughters or sisters with specially prepared food and rice beer. This tradition show the respect womenfolk have in the Phom households.

Kundaglun festival is celebrated by the Chang Nagas to invoke blessings for a successful and bountiful year and forge ahead with renewed strength and vigor. 

“The Konyak, Phom and Chang Nagas are among the Naga 'Warrior Tribes' who are all known for their bravery and courage. As our Konyak, Phom and Chang brothers and sisters celebrates their respective festivals, may the bond of brotherhood continue to remain strong and also continue to be the harbinger of peace and unity between our Naga families,” it conveyed. 

Dy CM: Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland Y Patton has greeted the Chang, Konyak and Phom communities as they celebrate their spring festivals of Kundaglun, Aoleang and Phom Monyu respectively. During this time people celebrate by exchange of rice beer, meat and family feast. The main objective is to leave behind the old season and pray for a favorable sowing season and a bountiful harvest.

On behalf of the state BJP legislators, the Dy CM conveyed festive greetings and hope that it is celebrated with grandeur and in good spirits.
