Nagaland: Government launches SUMAN at UPHC Seikhazou

Kohima, October 12 (MExN): Under the aegis of National Health Mission, office of the Chief Medical Officer along with District Health Society, Kohima and State Officials of Health & Family Welfare officially held a launching of SUMAN by Mission Director, NHM Dr Thorhüsie Katiry at UPHC Seikhazou on October 11.

A short programme was held at the Urban Primary Health Centre, Seikhazou. The programme was chaired by CMO, Dr Tumchobeni with felicitating the State Officials. Brief introduction of SUMAN was addressed by DPO, RMNCHA+N, Dr Rupert Peseyie, citing that, Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan Scheme (SUMAN) is an initiative by the Central Government for Zero preventable maternal and newborn death. Through SUMAN scheme the central government is committed to achieving the target of reducing maternal and infant mortality. This programme provides affordable and quality healthcare solution to pregnant women and newborns who receive zero expenses access up to six months after delivery. It is a robust redressal system of grievances within 24 hours. 

Mission Director (NHM), Dr Thorhüsie Katiry, said SUMAN in context with zero preventable services for Mother and Child should have the maximal outcome. He also said, that health care provider should be prompt in performing his/her duties with sincerity, as the initiative focuses on assured delivery of maternal and newborn healthcare services encompassing wider access to free and quality services, zero tolerance for denial of services, assured management of complications along with respect for women’s autonomy, dignity, feelings, choices and preferences. 

Representative from Naga Mothers Association (NMA), Joint Secretary, Sawmi Leyri, spoke about scheme which comes down centrally yet it’s not always conducive scheme. She also urged the department to very proactive in monitoring and supervising, as SUMAN scheme should directly benefit the beneficiary with fruitful outcome. Special number was presented by Ethungbemo Ezung, Drug Inspector.

In closing remarks, vote of thanks was pronounced by Dy.CMO, Dr Imchatoshi, thanking the State Officials of Health & Family Welfare present – Director (Health) Dr Temjentsungla, Joint Director (MH & FP) Dr Khelito, Dr Longri (UNICEF), Neisa (Program Manager- MH), Benjong (Consultant-CH), Staff of CMO, Kohima and UPHC Seikhazou.
