Along with the rest of the country, Nagaland is gearing up to conduct the State Educational Achievement Survey (SEAS) 2023 under the banner of PARAKH-NCERT on November 3 to assess the learning levels of children in Grades III, VI and IX.
To ensure the successful conduct of the survey, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland today conducted a one day training programme for district/block level functionaries at Capital Convention Centre, Kohima. SEAS is a comprehensive assessment of schools across all blocks and districts in India. Its primary purpose is to evaluate the overall health of the education system at the block level, encompassing government, government-aided and private schools.
SEAS, PARAKH findings play a pivotal role in informing policy making, strategic planning and the development of pedagogical interventions aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes at the grassroots level.
“The State Educational Achievement Survey (SEAS) for Grade III, VI and IX stands as a pivotal initiative, aligning itself with the transformative goals outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020,” said Indrani S Bhaduri, Professor and Head PARAKH and ESD, National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT).
In preface of the booklet, Bhaduri stated that “SEAS is more than an assessment tool; it embodies our commitment to nurturing every child’s talent and potential in our nation. It signifies our belief that education is the key to a brighter future of our youth and society as a whole.”
SEAS to cover 1643 schools in Nagaland
Addressing the introductory session of the training programme, Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary for School Education & SCERT Nagaland said that the state will be conducting the SEAS 2023 on November 3 in line with the rest of the states and union territories. In Nagaland, she said, the survey will cover 1,643 schools.
It will cover 805 government schools, 800 private schools and 38 central schools in the state. SEAS shall cover about 36,833 students involving 1,843 field investigators. She asked all the stakeholders to make necessary preparation for the successful conduct of the survey in the state.
Stating that SEAS was conducted earlier in 2014 but follow up was not given much importance, Dr Bijano Murry, Joint Mission Director, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland said “this time, we hope that the state will be able to take it further through proper follow up action.”
She said that 112 district and block coordinators have been assigned and over 1,800 Field Investigators identified to help administer the test to the students. She said the need for an independent holistic competency based assessment at all stages of the school education system is advocated in the NEP 2020; Class 3 at the end of the foundational stage, Class 6 at the end of the preparatory stage and Class 9 at the end of the middle or elementary stage.
Dr Murry said that the assessments will help obtain the actual state of the learning levels of the students. “The reports from such surveys will give impetus to plan and implement the right kind of interventions needed by the students as well as developing specific pedagogical areas to capacitate our teachers,” Dr Murry added.
