‘Nagaland Govt trying all possible means to help rubber growers’

Book on ‘Economics of Rubber Plantation in Nagaland’ launched 

Wokha, November 18 (MExN): The Deputy Chief Minister & In-Charge for Home Government of Nagaland, Y Patton on Friday stated that ‘the Government is trying all possible means in helping the rubber growers by way of providing various machineries to help in their endeavour’ and urged them to utilise the various assistance provided by the government judiciously as the objective of the government is to uplift them in their venture.

Patton stated this during the book launch of ‘Economics of Rubber Plantation in Nagaland’ written by Dr N Rentnungo Patton at Mt Tiyi College boys hostel on November 18, stated a DIPR report. 

The Dy Cm stated that rubber plantation in Nagaland has occupied an integral part of economic upliftment of the Naga people and for their economic sustenance. “Rubber cultivation is also another alternative means of farming which has the potential to boost our economy and also create employment opportunity for the youths as well as create opportunities to sustain ones livelihood,” he observed. 

Dr N Renthungo Patton while giving a brief summary about the book sais, the book is an extract from his doctoral thesis titled ‘Economics of Rubber Plantation in Nagaland: a case study of Wokha and Mokokchung district’ was completed under the guidance and supervision of Prof T Zurenthung Ezung, however the book speaks for not just for the two district but for Nagaland as a whole, and as such the title of the book has given as ‘Economics of Rubber Plantation in Nagaland.’

According to the author, this book tries to analyse rubber plantation and its impact on the local economy of the state. It is revealed in this book that there is a greater economic viability of rubber farming in the study area, giving the right support system, rubber plantation has potentiality to provide sustainability source of livelihood to the rubber farmers and further boost up the local economy as well.

He said that the potentiality of rubber farming being at its nascent stage is still not fully realized, where the author recommended some appropriate policies measures to be adopted for the benefit of the rubber growers, like the rubber board/government should give effective extension service for proper management of rubber plantation by organising extensive training camp for farmers in the state, awareness programme for market intelligence of the rubber farmers is essential in the state. 

He added that government to introduce minimum support price for farmers in the state in order to off-set the loss incurred particularly during fall in price of rubber products in the market, proper markets should be set up in all rubber growing districts in order to facilitate the farmers to dispose their produce with low transportation cost.
