‘Nagaland has large scope in beekeeping’

WOKHA, NOVEMBER 5 (MExN): A one day awareness programme on the ‘Scope & Importance of Bee, Beekeeping & Honey’ initiated by Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NBHM) in collaboration with Central Institute Horticulture (CIH) Midziphema, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare was held at Sanis town under Wokha District on November 5.

The objective of the programme is to encourage and motivate the farmers on income generation and crop productivity and production through bee pollinating services. The programme also targets quality control of honey and marketing strategy.

Advisor, Horticulture & Border Affairs, Mhathung Yanthan said Nagaland Beekeeping & Honey Mission (NHBM) has come a long way since its inception back in 2007. He expressed happiness that the intention of the State Government, the purpose for which the focused mission (NHBM) was launched, has achieved many laurels.

He also thanked the NHBM for venturing into new activities in the form of giving livelihood support to the beekeepers and also to the community. He said that bee keeping is crucial for agricultural well-being and pointed to the natural biological interdependence that comes from bee pollination and production of seeds, be it agriculture, horticulture or other forestry produces. 

A state like Nagaland, with a rural based agrarian economy, has large scope in beekeeping or apiculture, he stated and urged the trainees to protect and preserve the bees.

Commissioner & Secretary to Governor of Nagaland and Team Leader NHBM, T Mhabemo Yanthan, while delivering key note address said, sustaining the economy of the rural people is very important in any kind of society. 

“The potential of the beekeeping that will support and sustain the economy of the rural population was conceived by than the team leader of the NHBM and present Advisor of Horticulture & Border Affairs Mhathung Yanthan in 2007 and today the nodal department is doing a fantastic job,” he said. 

He further noted that recently the department had received the national award for wild honey and mushroom cultivation under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs; and under Van Dhan Vikas Kendra (VDVK) the State received nine awards.

Altogether seventy beekeepers and horticulture farmers from fifteen villages under Sanis division attended the awareness training programme.
