Nagaland has lowest infant mortality rate in India

The Infant Mortality rate in Nagaland has decreased to three as compared to 32 in the country. The state has the lowest Infant Mortality rate in the country, according to Annual Administrative Report 2021-2022 of the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland tabled at the recent state assembly session.

The report stated that the maternal mortality rate has also decreased to 85 as compared with 113 in the country. 

Despite the pandemic, the department has taken all measures to provide essential services to pregnant mothers, new-born and children including facility-based care and through outreach service like the village health and nutrition days.

During 2021-22 (April to December 2021, Source: HMIS), 6326 pregnant mothers were given incentives under the Janani Suraksha Yojana scheme and 5648 pregnant mothers benefitted through free  diagnostics, drugs, diet and referral transport under  Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakaram  helping the poorest in reducing out of pocket expenditures at hospitals.

The report also stated that 24,609 pregnant women were provided with Ante Natal Care services and 9609 women availed institutional delivery service from the hospitals.

The report stated that the state is also implementing SUMAN- An Initiative for Zero preventable maternal and new born deaths in all the districts with the focus on improving quality of care, ensuring supply of drugs/logistics and capacity building of healthcare workers.
