The state department of geology and mining is effectively implementing the Nagaland Coal Policy 2006 and the Nagaland Coal Mine Rule 2006 for scientific and judicious exploitation of coal resources in the state. This was stated in the Annual Administrative Report (2012-13) of the geology and mining department tabled in the assembly session recently. The report stated that the department has so far issued 15 number of Coal Mining License to companies/individuals.
The state government has notified 17 check gates in order to regulate and monitor coal mining activities and transportation of coal. It has also approved setting up of 3 stockyard/coal depot. Referring to coal exploration, the report stated that Regional Coal exploration at Khar coal deposits to study the prospect of setting up of Thermal Power Plant in collaboration with Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Ltd (CMPDI) as of date have completed geological Survey-mapping of 10.01 sq km for a target of 52 sq k. It has drilled 750.60 metres so far for a target of 3000 metre. 18 numbers of drill core samples have already been submitted to NEIST, Jorhat for laboratory studies. The report also stated that 17 geological reports have been prepared based on the field investigations and submitted for issue of Coal Mining License.
