Registers commanding win over Sikkim
DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 9 (MExN): Nagaland’s performance in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy has been nothing short of impressive, and their recent commanding victory over Sikkim has placed them on the verge of qualifying for the finals.
In this match, Nagaland triumphed by an innings and 39 runs, a victory that not only added 20 vital points to their tally but also strengthened their hold on second place in the Plate Group standings. This win sets up a crucial encounter against Mizoram, with the possibility of facing Goa in the finals looming large.
The victory over Sikkim highlighted the team’s all-around strength, with Nischal Dega leading the charge with a brilliant 116 runs, supported by Hem Chetri, who added 67 runs. The Nagaland bowlers, too, were exceptional, with Dip Borah’s brilliant 5/31 dismantling Sikkim’s batting lineup in the first innings. Jagadeesha Suchith continued his fiery form, taking 6/36 to ensure a comprehensive victory for Nagaland.
Dega Nischal’s consistency with the bat has been a major contributor to Nagaland’s success this season, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 564 runs and three centuries to his name.
Alongside him, Jagadeesha Suchith’s exceptional bowling performances, which have earned him 31 wickets, have been key to the team’s dominant run. His three five-wicket hauls, including a match-winning performance against Sikkim, have made him one of the top bowlers in the tournament. Johantan has also quietly but effectively contributed to Nagaland’s success, with 20 wickets to his name, providing essential breakthroughs when needed.
Looking ahead, Nagaland’s next match against Mizoram, scheduled from November 13 to 16 at the Gokulbhai Somabhai Patel Stadium in Nadiad, will be a decisive one. A victory would secure their place in the finals, where they are likely to face Goa, the top team in the Plate Group. Col C K Nayudu Trophy
On Day 2 of the Col C K Nayudu Trophy, Nagaland’s Under-23 team found themselves in a difficult position, trailing Jammu & Kashmir by 328 runs at the close of play. Jammu & Kashmir declared their first innings at a massive 557/5, thanks to stellar centuries from Arnav Gupta, who scored 168 runs off 169 balls, and Yawer Hassan, who remained unbeaten on 159 runs off 226 balls. In response, Nagaland’s first innings was a struggle, with the team bowled out for just 159 runs. Mujtaba Yousuf’s impressive bowling performance, where he claimed 5/53, helped restrict Nagaland.
In their second innings, Nagaland faced further challenges, ending Day 2 at 70/3. Vishal Sahani was the top scorer for Nagaland, contributing 27 runs. With a deficit of 328 runs, Nagaland will need a strong fightback on Day 3 if they are to stay in contention in the match.
