
Kohima, September 27 (MExN): Nagaland will join the rest of the country in conducting a mass social work on October 2 dubbed as the ‘Plastic Shramdan’. This cleanliness drive is aimed specifically on collection of plastic wastes as part of the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva-Cleanliness is Service’ mooted and launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi himself. The Shramdan is scheduled on October 2 ,the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi in recognition of the Mahatma’s concern for cleanliness.
The nationwide Shramdan will be targeted towards collection of plastic wastes in all cities, towns and villages of the country including the highways and major roads. The plastic waste collected on the day will be segregated and sent to cement plants and road making agencies for recycling and other purposes.
In Nagaland the campaign is being spearheaded by Urban Development Department in collaboration with other government departments including the army and para military forces. In the towns, the mass social work will be organized by the DCs, Administrative Officers and ULBs while in the villages campaign will be managed by the PHE and RD departments with the help of VDBs and Village councils. Along the highways and major roads Departments of National Highways and Roads and Bridges has been entrusted to collect the plastic wastes.
Mass collection drives should be conducted in all residential premises, all offices (Central, State and Private), Education Institutions, religious places, parks, tourist spots, hotels and restaurants, stadiums and public grounds, market places, hospitals and clinics, Industrial areas, national and state highways, nullahs and streams etc.
The collected plastic wastes are to be segregated into recyclable and non-recyclable cleaned, dried and stored in a sheltered collection points. From October 3 to 7: transportation of the collected wastes ward/village collection points to the nearest ULB MRF and further segregation of plastic waste. From October 8 to 10: transportation of segregated plastic waste from ULB MRF to district MRF. From October 11 to 27: Baling and transportation of plastic waste from District MRF to the cement plant(s).
Transportation of collected waste in rural areas will be managed by the Rural Development and PHED Departments and in urban areas by ULBs.
